Before entering politics, Deschênes was a lawyer at the Bas-St-Laurent-Gaspésie-Les-îles bar association and at Quebec Legal Aid for 10 years. From 2013 to 2015, he was a lawyer at the Quebec Ministry of Justice.
Prior to his legal career, Deschênes was a journalist at Radio-Canada from 2003 to 2005 and at TVA from 2006 to 2010.
