Before being elected, Gainey was executive director of Canada 2020, a think tank founded by her husband, Tom Pitfield. Pitfield is now the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Gainey was president of the Liberal Party from 2014 to 2018. She was a staffer for Liberal ministers John McCallum and Bill Graham from 2003 to 2006.
Since 2007, Gainey has been the executive director of the Gainey Foundation, an educational charity founded by her father, Hockey Hall of Fame winger Bob Gainey.
Gainey’s husband, Tom Pitfield, holds significant investment assets. He solely owns three holding companies and owns significant stocks in several large corporations. Pitfield is a director of more than a dozen companies, including the marketing analytics firm Data Sciences Inc., Canada 2020, the software company Salesfloor, NMP-T Investments, the Ottawa restaurant T.J. Pagoda’s, several numbered companies, and a school located in Montreal.
Gainey grew up in Westmount, Canada’s richest city. She is the beneficiary of a family trust fund.
