Carr won effectively inherited his position in parliament from his father, Jim Carr, who held the seat from 2015 until his death in 2022. Ben subsequently won the seat in the by-election to replace his father. Jim Carr was also deputy leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party and an MLA in the Manitoba legislature from 1988 to 1992. Ben acted as campaign manager and political advisor to his father from 2014 to 2015.
From 2012 to 2016, Carr taught at Kelvin High School in Winnipeg. In 2016, he became Director of Parliamentary Affairs for Heritage Canada for two years. From 2018 to 2023, he was a school principal in the Winnipeg area. From 2022 to 2023, he was also vice president of Indigenous Strategy Alliance, a Winnipeg-based consulting firm.
