Before becoming an MP, Leitão sat on the board of directors of the Bank of Canada. From 2014 to 2022, he was a member of the Quebec National Assembly for the Coalition Avenir Québec, holding the position of Finance Minister from 2014 to 2018.
From 2003 to 2014, Leitão was the chief economist for Laurentian Bank Securities. From 1983 to 2003, he was an economist at the Royal Bank of Canada.
