Before entering politics, Freeland worked as a journalist from 1993 until her election to parliament. She eventually held editorial positions at the Financial Times, Reuters, and The Globe and Mail. She has published two books: Sale of the Century: Russia’s Wild Ride from Communism to Capitalism (2000), and Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else. She is a member of the board of trustees of the World Economic Forum.
Freeland jointly owns rental properties in Kyiv, Ukraine; London, England; and Peace River, Alberta. Her husband, Graham Bowley, also owns a rental property in New York.
Freeland is the niece of noted historian John-Paul Himka and the granddaughter of the Nazi collaborator and newspaper editor Michael Chomiak (Mykhailo Khomiak). She is a personal friend of Manish Srivastava, managing director at the investment firm CPP Investments.
