Before becoming an MP, Muys was the principal of Dan Muys Communications & PR beginning in. In 2017, he became co-president of CPRS Hamilton, a local affiliate of the Canadian Public Relations Society. From 2013 to 2014, he was the director of marketing for the Ontario Stone, Sand & Gravel Association. From 1995 to 2013, Muys held a number of other senior roles in public relations in the private sector, including for Monsanto Canada.
While in university, Muys was an assistant to various federal cabinet ministers in the governments of Brian Mulroney and Kim Campbell.
