Before being elected to parliament, May was executive director of the environmental nonprofit Sierra Club of Canada from 1989 until she became Green Party leader in 2006.
From 1986 to 1988, May was a policy advisor to Progressive Conservative Environment Minister Thomas McMillan. From 1983 to 1985, she practised environmental law in Halifax.
May is the sole owner of a commercial farm in Ashcroft, B.C. and a rental property in Vancouver. Her husband, John Kidder, also owns rental properties.
