Before entering politics, McLean was the managing director of merchant capital for the consulting firm Criterium Group from 2015 to 2019. He was also the principal of Shift Capital, a real estate developer, from 2010 to 2019. He has worked for the investment firms Qwest (2013–2015) and Cavendish Investing (2004–2009).
While in university, McLean was an advisor to Conservative cabinet ministers in the Mulroney government, where he worked on files that included the privatization of Via Rail and CN Rail.
McLean holds significant investment assets in the form of shares and other products. His wife, Ruth Pogue, owns five rental properties in Calgary. Pogue holds interests in several Calgary-area companies, including the holding company 1131588 Alberta Ltd., the airline company 1263343 Alberta Inc., the online retail company Shop to It, and the oil and gas producers Storm Development Corp. and Spur Petroleum.
