Before becoming an MP, Robertson was a global ambassador for the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy from 2019 to 2005. From 2019 to 2023, he was also an executive vice president at Nexii Building Solutions, a construction technology company.
From 2008 to 2018 Robertson was the mayor of Vancouver. From 2005 to 2008, he was a member of the B.C. legislature for the NDP.
Prior to entering politics, Robertson founded Happy Planet Foods, an organic foods manufacturer, in 1994. He co-owned it and acted as its CEO until 2004. From 1990 to 1998, he co-owned and operated Glen Valley Organic Farm in Abbotsford, B.C.
