Before becoming an MP, MacDonald was a member of the P.E.I. legislature from 2015 to 2021, where he held the posts of Minister of Economic Development and Tourism and Minister of Finance.
Prior to entering politics, MacDonald was from 2011 to 2015 the owner and president of BamText, a customer feedback service. From 1997 to 2015, he was also an advisor at Quality Tourism Services, a nonprofit organization contracted by the P.E.I. government to inspect tourist accommodations. He became executive director of that organization in 2012.
