Before entering politics, Battiste was a treaty education lead for Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey, a not-for-profit organization that promotes Mi’kmaw education rights. Battiste’s parents, Marie Ann Battiste and James Sákéj Youngblood Henderson, are both accomplished academics.
Battiste was the subject of controversy in 2019 after the Toronto Sun published a collection of sexist tweets he had made before entering politics.
