Before becoming an MP, McKelvie was a Toronto city councillor from 2018 to 2025, becoming deputy mayor in 2022. Prior to entering politics, she was a senior scientist at the Nuclear Waste Management Organization from 2009 to 2018. From 2016 to 2017, she was also a senior scientist at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research.
