Before entering politics, Strauss was the medical director of the Guelph General Hospital’s intensive care unit. He was the acting medical officer of health for Haldimand and Norfolk counties, Ontario, from 2021 to 2023. He resigned from that post after facing heavy criticism for his opposition to COVID safety measures.
From 2019 to 2021, Strauss was an assistant professor of medicine at Queen’s University. He subsequently sued the Queen’s department of medicine for allegedly defaming him following social media posts where he spoke out against COVID-19 restrictions. Elon Musk tweeted support for Strauss and said he would fund Strauss’s lawsuit. Strauss denies accepting any money from Musk.
Strauss has also been a professor of medicine at McMaster University.
