Before entering federal politics, Coteau was a member of the Ontario provincial parliament from 2011 to 2021. Under Kathleen Wynne’s Liberals, he held several cabinet positions, including Citizenship and Immigration; Tourism, Culture and Sport; and Community and Social Services.
From 2008 to 2012, Coteau owned a business called Capture Media. From 2004 to 2008, he was an organizer for Malvern Family Resource Centre, a social services organization in Scarborough, Ontario.
