Before entering politics, Bonin was a climate and energy campaigner at Greenpeace for 12 years where he was a colleague of Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault. He has also held administrative positions at Climate Action Network Canada, the Front commun pour la transition énergétique (Common Front for Energy Transition), and the Association québécoise de lutte contre la pollution atmosphérique (Quebec Association to Combat Air Pollution).
