Before entering politics, Lawrence was employed by Sun Life Financial, first as a financial planner (2007–2013) and then as a manager (2013–2019). Previously, he was a lawyer at the firm Sullivan Mahoney in St. Catharines, Ontario.
Lawrence and his wife, Natasha, own 1840 Farmhouse & Vineyard, a winery in Orono, Ontario.
