Most of Chartrand’s career has been in the education sector. From 2001 to 2017 and again from 2020 to 2021, she was an administrator, first in the Winnipeg School Division, and then in the Seven Oaks School Division in Winnipeg. From 2017 to 2020, Chartrand was the executive director of Red River College. From 1999 to 2002, she was a high school teacher.
Before entering politics, Chartrand was President of Indigenous Strategy Alliance, a Winnipeg-based consulting firm. From 2021 to 2022, she was a vice president at Indspire, an indigenous education charity.
