Before entering politics, Martel was a hockey coach in the QMJHL (1993–2014), France’s Ligue Magnus (2014–2015), and the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey (2016–2017). He became commissioner of the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey for the 2017–2018 season.
Martel and his spouse jointly own two rental properties in Chicoutimi, Quebec.
