Before becoming an MP, MacKinnon was from 2007 to 2015 a senior vice president at Hill & Knowlton, a public relations firm whose checkered past includes advocacy for the tobacco and fossil-fuel industries, as well as allegations it spread false information to drum up support for the Gulf War.
From 2003 to 2007, MacKinnon was the national director of the Liberal Party of Canada. From 1998 to 2003, he was a senior vice president at Hawk Communications.
MacKinnon holds an interest in MacKinn Inn, a rental cottage in P.E.I. His wife, Janelle MacKinnon is the sole owner of Ergoconcepts, an occupational therapy service in Gatineau. Janelle was stripped of her occupational therapy licence in Ontario in 2023 when it was discovered she failed to disclose findings of professional misconduct against her in Quebec. The Order of Occupational Therapists of Quebec found that she had billed for treatment not rendered and reports not provided, overbilled for services, used people’s signatures persons without their consent, and failed to keep proper records.
