Before being elected to parliament, Duguid held a number of executive roles. He was President and CEO of the nonprofit Sustainable Development International from 1997 to 2000 and again from 2009 to 2015. From 1996 to 1998, he was president and CEO of Gateway North Marketing Agency.
Duguid was the chairman of the Manitoba Clean Energy Commission from 2003 to 2005.
From 1989 to 1995, Duguid was a Winnipeg City Councillor. From 1987 to 1989, he was the executive director of the Manitoba Liberal Party.
